Pulmonary diagnostics

Under the Flagship we have created a full simulation model that links the ventilatory cycle (for estimation of gas exchange during resting breathing and exercise challenge) to ventilation distribution during deep inhalation, and to forced expiration, and we have coupled this with a new dynamic model for inert gas transport. This version of the virtual lung has the capability to link 3D imaging (MRI or PET of ventilation defects) to forced expiration (the mainstay of pulmonary function testing) and to laboratory tests that are more sensitive to ventilation heterogeneity (inert gas washout). We are validating the model against diverse data sets, for normal lung and pathology.
